IRS Impersonation Email Scam
The IRS has recently reported that a new spin on the usual IRS impersonation scam has been making the rounds. This comes in the form of an email titled something similar to “Automatic Income Tax Reminder” or “Electronic Tax Return Reminder.” These emails contain malicious links to websites that imitate the legitimate IRS website. Clicking these links can lead to malware being installed on your computer.
As a reminder, the IRS does not initiate contact by email, text, or social media in order to request personal or financial information, including PIN numbers, passwords, or banking information. They do not call to demand payment in the form of prepaid cards or wires. Generally, the IRS will first mail a bill to taxpayers who still owe taxes.
