First Bank & Trust Donates $25,000 for Canton Flood Relief
Friday, August 1st
First Bank & Trust announced a $25,000 donation to help Canton area residents recover from June’s flooding. The funds were donated to the Sioux Falls Area Community Foundation’s Canton Community Relief Fund to disburse funds to those in most need of assistance.
“There are so many Canton residents that are trying to repair their homes and replace their belongings after the flooding,” said Nancy Bitterman, Community President of First Bank & Trust, Canton. “We are hoping that this donation challenges others who are able to give so that our community can get back to normal.”
Bitterman said that many First Bank & Trust employees and customers were affected by the flooding. The bank had donated cleaning supplies in the immediate aftermath of the flooding, followed by an ice cream social that raised $2,300 toward relief efforts. When they heard of the plan to raise funds through the Sioux Falls Area Community Foundation, however, the Bank decided to step forward with a more significant donation.
“When we heard of the challenge to raise funds that would be disbursed through the Canton Community Relief fund, we knew we wanted to make a more sizable donation,” said Bitterman. “Their plan ensures the funding will go to those in the greatest need.”
Bitterman said she is eager to see the community rebuild after the flooding. Though the town has dried out, there is much work to be done in hundreds of homes.
“It’s been great to see all the volunteers coming out to help,” said Bitterman. “You really get a sense of pride in the community and in what we are able to accomplish by working together.”
