New ‘Nasty’ Ransomware

A new type of ransomware has been discovered and it’s particularly devious. The software turns ransomware victims into attackers by offering a pyramid scheme-style discount.

A user who finds themselves infected with the Popcorn Time malware is offered the ability to unlock their files for a cash payment or a second option, described as “the nasty way,” is to pass on a link to the malware and trick others into installing it on their device. This will allow you free decryption of your data for passing on the ransomware.

This distribution method could lead it to be one of the more widespread variants of this type of malware. The best way to avoid making the difficult choice of paying the ransom or infecting others is to not get infected in the first place by using the following tips:

  1. Back up important data daily
  2. Take a hard stance against opening ANY suspicious emails or links
  3. Install security software on your system
  4. Disconnect from your network immediately if you think you’ve been infected

Hackers continue to innovate their malware daily. Help prevent the spread of Popcorn Time and protect your data by being informed and aware as you interact online.
