Computer Security

Email Security

  • Don’t open attachments, click on links, or respond to emails that come from unknown, suspicious senders.
  • Don’t respond to urgent emails that request personal information.
  • Always log off your account(s) when done when using an unsecured device.
 

Mobile Security

  • Always put a password on your home screen.
  • If selling or purchasing a new phone, always delete all information off the old phone.
  • Keep the operating system updated.
 

Online Security

  • Never use your social security number (full or partial) as a user ID or password.
  • Do not reuse the same user ID and password.
  • Do not share or write down your passwords. If your password is learned, reset immediately.
  • Limit the amount of personal information that is shared through social media sites.
  • Don’t be friends with people you do not know.
  • Don’t click on links that are sent from unknown users.
 

Public Wi-Fi Security

  • Never access your personal or financial information when using public Wi-Fi.
  • Never leave your computer, phone, or items unattended while in a public setting.
 

Digital Account Security

  • Enable multi-factor authentication (MFA). This may include biometrics, like a thumbprint or face ID, or a text verification code to sign into accounts.
    • Never share the code with anyone!
  • Enable account notifications when offered such as unusual logins, recently used devices, location alerts, or balance/account changes.
  • Never share login usernames or passwords.
 

Malicious Links: Red Flags

  • The message, email, or text that contains the link was unexpected.
  • The language within the message has grammatical and/or spelling errors.
  • There is a sense of urgency.
  • The link address shows a different website address than what you would expect.
 

Fake Websites: Red Flags

  • The website address closely resembles the legitimate website but has errors.
    • For example, a zero (0) is used in place of an O or there is a missing/extra letter.
  • The website’s format, appearance, and navigation seem off to you.
  • The website is missing pages and other information you normally see.
  • The website immediately prompts to a form that asks for sensitive information.
